BRC reports gloomy sales figures
New figures have indicated that UK retail sales fell in April, indicating that the economic situation is starting to hit small businesses.
The British Retail Consortium's (BRC) latest Retail Sales Monitor showed that sales values fell 1.5 per cent last month, when compared on a like-for-like basis with April 2007.
It said that this year's early Easter and rain at the beginning of April dampened sales somewhat.
However, the BRC added that "underlying trade remained tough" in 2008. It warned that consumer confidence has dropped to a new low and this was making shoppers "very price-conscious and reluctant to spend on big-ticket items".
Stephen Robertson, the director general at the BRC, commented: "With higher fuel and utility bills eating away at people’s spare cash, they are concentrating on essentials like food.
"Retailers will look to the recent sunny weather to provide some boost but with the economic fundamentals remaining weak, there seems no reason for these tough trading conditions to improve soon."
Helen Dickinson, head of retail at KPMG, added: "It is doubtful that the fine weather will be sufficient to significantly boost consumer confidence in the current environment."
