Businesses urged to embrace rail networks
The UK's freight rail network is vital for small businesses across the country, industry experts have claimed.
A new report from the Freight Transport Association (FTA) stressed that rail networks should be increasingly used over the next 30 years to carry freight around the country.
It said that more road congestion will make it vital that small businesses embrace the rail network.
A statement from the FTA explained that "rail freight is a key part of the UK supply chain" and that it helps improve the "efficiency for manufacturers, retailers and traditional bulk trades".
The report noted that there has been a 66 per cent growth rail freight usage since the mid-1990s.
It added: "FTA calls on the rail freight industry to attract further business by a combination of reduced operating costs, a seven day accessible freight network, the removal of pinch-points on the network, development of terminals and liberalisation of rail freight services across Europe in order to facilitate improved international competition."
