Local authorities urged to help businesses improve recycling
While small businesses are working hard to reduce the amount of packaging they use, local councils need to better support commercial recycling efforts, a pressure group has said.
The recent Local Government Association (LGA) packaging survey showed that most small retailers have already made good progress in reducing packaging since last autumn.
According to the report, recycling rates in England jumped 33 per cent thanks to business initiatives.
However, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) has now said that local authorities should be exploring positive steps to encourage recycling. Instead, it warned many were simply "looking for ways to pile new costs on hard-pressed customers and retailers".
Stephen Robertson, the BRC's director general, commented: "Retailers are contributing millions of pounds a year to help support government-approved recycling schemes.
"Rather than looking for new ways to tap retailers and, in turn, hard-pressed customers for extra cash local authorities would make a more positive contribution by developing their recycling facilities and increasing and standardising the range of materials they will accept for recycling."
